Cinder by Marissa Meyer

Rating 3 stars out of 5 stars

This is a YA story that is a sci-fi retelling/reimagined Cinderella story. Cinder is a story with a sci-fi background set in New Beijing. Cinder, the main character is talented mechanic and a cyborg, I say heck yea! How fun is this ride going to be? Well, I wanted it to be awesome. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed it but I didn’t love it mostly due to some drag time in moving the plot forward in the beginning. The author picks up pace mid way and ends on a high for the next CinderCoverArtbook.

Cinder is blamed by her step mother for her step sister’s illness, which is a pandemic. Cinder meets Prince Kai, where he is seeking her talents to fix his android. There is the royal ball coming up in part for the announcement of a marriage for Kai and the Lunar Queen, for political purposes of course. There are lots of interesting conflicts with twists and turns.

My Top 5 Fiction Books Read in 2013

The Goodreads book challenge for 2013 commitment I made was 25 books. I read not only for my pleasure but for my education while working on my 1st novel.   For my year-end review I knocked my goal outta the park with 33 books read this year.  There were certainly some favorites along with some stinkers, and also note not all books where newly published in 2013.  In this blog I am going to focus on my top 5 favorite fiction books of the year from the books I read.  For fiction I enjoy Romance (Paranormal and Contemporary), Sci-Fi, Adventure, Mystery and Comedy.

Below are the books along with their jacket summaries.  I did write reviews on a few of them via Amazon and Goodreads, therefore my challenge for 2014 is to write reviews, especially ones where I think the author knocked it outta the park and share in my blog.

I am really taken away by #1, although the summary is brief it really packs a punch this book.  I couldn’t stop talking about it, whomever would listen to me right after I read it – heard about it.  I just love the concept of this book and the author’s ability to weave the story and characters growth is fantastic.  I honestly don’t care it’s classified as young adult.  Also, dare I say it, I have some love for Death (a new character) and excited to see where this series of books will go.

Are there any fiction books you where super excited about this year that you’d like to share? If so please leave a comment below!  I’m curious on your thoughts to my Top 5 as well and would love to hear from you.

#1 – Endless Knight (The Arcana Chronicles #2) by Kresley Cole

Endless Knight

Evie has her full powers as the Tarot Empress, and Jack was there to see it all. Teens reincarnated as the Tarot are in the throes of an epic battle for mankind. She must trust new allies against other Arcana, Bagmen zombies, post-apocalyptic storms, and cannibals. But she’s also drawn to Death, the Endless Knight, who shares history with the Empress. She can’t remember; he can’t forget.

#2 – Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion

Warm Bodies

‘R’ is a zombie. He has no name, no memories and no pulse, but he has dreams. He is a little different from his fellow Dead.

Amongst the ruins of an abandoned city, R meets a girl. Her name is Julie and she is the opposite of everything he knows – warm and bright and very much alive, she is a blast of colour in a dreary grey landscape. For reasons he can’t understand, R chooses to save Julie instead of eating her, and a tense yet strangely tender relationship begins.

This has never happened before. It breaks the rules and defies logic, but R is no longer content with life in the grave. He wants to breathe again, he wants to live, and Julie wants to help him. But their grim, rotting world won’t be changed without a fight…

#3 – Styxx (Dark-Hunters #22) by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Styxx

Just when you thought doomsday was over…

Centuries ago Acheron saved the human race by imprisoning an ancient evil bent on absolute destruction. Now that evil has been unleashed and it is out for revenge.  As the twin to Acheron, Styxx hasn’t always been on his brother’s side. They’ve spent more centuries going at each other’s throats than protecting their backs. Now Styxx has a chance to prove his loyalty to his brother, but only if he’s willing to trade his life and future for Acheron’s.

The Atlantean goddess of Wrath and Misery, Bethany was born to right wrongs. But it was never a task she relished. Until now. She owes Acheron a debt that she vows to repay, no matter what it takes. He will join their fellow gods in hell and nothing is going to stop her.

But things are never what they seem, and Acheron is no longer the last of his line. Styxx and Acheron must put aside their past and learn to trust each other or more will suffer.  Yet it’s hard to risk your own life for someone who once tried to take yours, even when it’s your own twin, and when loyalties are skewed and no one can be trusted, not even yourself, how do you find a way back from the darkness that wants to consume the entire world? One that wants to start by devouring your very soul?

#4 – Enders Game by Orson Scott Card

Enders Game

In order to develop a secure defense against a hostile alien race’s next attack, government agencies breed child geniuses and train them as soldiers. A brilliant young boy, Andrew “Ender” Wiggin lives with his kind but distant parents, his sadistic brother Peter, and the person he loves more than anyone else, his sister Valentine. Peter and Valentine were candidates for the soldier-training program but didn’t make the cut—young Ender is the Wiggin drafted to the orbiting Battle School for rigorous military training.

Ender’s skills make him a leader in school and respected in the Battle Room, where children play at mock battles in zero gravity. Yet growing up in an artificial community of young soldiers Ender suffers greatly from isolation, rivalry from his peers, pressure from the adult teachers, and an unsettling fear of the alien invaders. His psychological battles include loneliness, fear that he is becoming like the cruel brother he remembers, and fanning the flames of devotion to his beloved sister.

Is Ender the general Earth needs? But Ender is not the only result of the genetic experiments. The war with the Buggers has been raging for a hundred years, and the quest for the perfect general has been underway for almost as long. Ender’s two older siblings are every bit as unusual as he is, but in very different ways. Between the three of them lie the abilities to remake a world. If, that is, the world survives.

#5 – Real by Katy Evans

REAL

A fallen boxer.

A woman with a broken dream.

A competition…

He even makes me forget my name. One night was all it took, and I forgot everything and anything except the sexy fighter in the ring who sets my mind ablaze and my body on fire with wanting…

Remington Tate is the strongest, most confusing man I’ve ever met in my life.  He’s the star of the dangerous underground fighting circuit, and I’m drawn to him as I’ve never been drawn to anything in my life. I forget who I am, what I want, with just one look from him. When he’s near, I need to remind myself that I am strong–but he is stronger. And now it’s my job to keep his body working like a perfect machine, his taut muscles primed and ready to break the bones of his next opponents . . .

But the one he’s most threatening to, now, is me. I want him. I want him without fear. Without reservations. If only I knew for sure what it is that he wants from me?

NANO You, NANO Me, 1 Month in Counting!

In just a few short weeks it will be the start of National Novel Writing Month (NANO).  Are you ready? I’m there.  I am going to finish my 1st draft this year, this November; the gauntlet is thrown (hopefully it won’t boomerang back at my head!).  This is my first go at NANO and I’m totally pumped.

Many people say that they want to write, but really the satisfaction is to those who finish.  You may have heard of the novel made into a movie, ‘Water for Elephants’ by Sara Gruen – yep NANO.

Alrighty then, what do you need to do, to get your writing on?  And why am I already talking about this in October? Well, for me, I’m getting my butt in gear to mentally prep and plot.  My goal is butt in chair, write and finish this stinking 1st draft that haunts me – recent deadline passed, argh!  I might write before the actual start, hooray me if I get a little ahead, as that doesn’t happen too often.

NANO (www.nanowrimo.org) starts November 1-30 and the challenge is to write your novel and/or complete 50,000 words.  The best part it’s free!  You create an account and connect with a community of like-minded individuals who are working on their stories that have been in progress or those first timers who are taking a dip in the pool to flex their writing muscles.  It’s a great opportunity to meet others and connect.

It’s a built-in deadline and contest for all ages globally, with the prize of self-satisfaction of completing your novel.  It started in 1999 and last year there where over 340,000 participants and over 38,000 winners (i.e., completing the word count goal)! Lots of success to be found, many of these novels found publishers and have been self-published.

Comment below – Will you be joining NANO this year? Have you participated in NANO before, if so what’s your experience? Will you complete your writing goals this year?  I sure hope so, I love to read and it would be a shame not to have your story out there because you didn’t finish it.

In the words of Wayne Gretzky “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”

If you enjoyed this blog, please like and share below! Walk the talk, or write as it were.  I’ll see you at NANO 🙂

Infamous-ly fantastic!

There is a lot of buzz about the Hunger Games, I did not board that train, because I didn’t get hooked within the first few chapters so, I gave up.  Maybe I’ll give it a go later, but my excitement is all about Nick, Nick Gautier (pronounced Go-Shay).

Infamous is the title of the 3rd book in the ‘Chronicle’s of Nick’ series written by the talented, Sherrilyn Kenyon.  I received this via my Kindle on March 13th and had it read by March 16th – yep it’s that good, a bit darker but still a great ride!  This is a young adult spin off of one of my favorite characters in the adult paranormal romance series ‘The Dark Hunters’ by the same author.  I have to admit I just want to know what is going to happen with this character and how this will be weaved into ‘The Dark Hunters’ series.  If you haven’t given it a try, you should or at least your teens should… what an adventure and what fun!

About the book:

Now Nick’s saga continues in the next eagerly anticipated volume…

Go to school. Get good grades. Stay out of trouble. That’s the mandate for most kids. But Nick Gautier isn’t the average teenager. He’s a boy with a destiny not even he fully understands. And his first mandate is to stay alive while everyone, even his own father, tries to kill him.

He’s learned to annihilate zombies and raise the dead, divination and clairvoyance, so why is learning to drive such a difficulty? But that isn’t the primary skill he has to master. Survival is.

And in order to survive, his next lesson makes all the others pale in comparison. He is on the brink of becoming either the greatest hero mankind has ever known.

Book Series Order:

1st Book – Infinity

2nd Book – Invincible
