Defy By Sara B Larson

Rating: 5  out of 5 Stars

I obviously really enjoyed this story, per my star rating above.  As you know, I’m stingy on handing out 5 stars ratings.  This book is YA (Young Adult), and this middle-aged adult couldn’t put it down.  I enjoy the switcheroo type stories then this had a Merlin type backdrop that put me in heaven.  I thought it was a great story, there are certainly some mixed reviews on it, but stories and entertainment are subjective.

Fantastic tale set in Medieval times about a girl (Alexa) and her twin brother (Marcel) in their roles for survival upon their parents deaths.  Alexa will assume her new identity as Alex to join her brother in the king’s army.  Certainly no damsels in distress here.  Alex is a powerful character in disguise.  His/her character growth is well paced and revealing as most teenaged girls.

Illusion by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Illusion (Chronicles of Nick #5) By Sherrilyn Kenyon

Rating 4.5 out of 5 stars

This is book 5 in the Young Adult series by Sherrilyn Kenyon focusing on a well loved (especially by me) character from artworks-000074210454-qmgxad-originalher adult series Nicholas “Nick” Ambrosius Gautier (pronounced Go-shay). Nick has always wanted to be normal kid and avoid his demon biological side that’s fated to end the world, and in this book he gets to see the flip side of what his normal world would look like. Of course normal isn’t always what it seems cue all other characters from the adult Dark-Hunters Series and twist them into polar opposites. This makes for a heck of an adventure and many laugh out loud moments from a typical sarcastic witty male teenager that is written to perfection. Great addition to the series so far!

If you haven’t read the previous books, I’m not sure how you could love this book, the way die-hard fans such as myself would. So many characters so many twists and turns and fun throughout the series. I really get tickled with this YA series and enjoy the paranormal series that author has weaved so perfectly that we get a second sight of seeing Nick grow up and possibly change plots in future DH books.

GoodReads Review

Rumor has it, movie and TV deals are in the making for this series… I pray they (movie and TV Gods) get this right, it’s too good to not pay it the right attention. None the less, I would highly recommend you enjoy the books prior to the visual entertainment, the mental entertainment is top-notch if you enjoy a good paranormal.

Cinder by Marissa Meyer

Rating 3 stars out of 5 stars

This is a YA story that is a sci-fi retelling/reimagined Cinderella story. Cinder is a story with a sci-fi background set in New Beijing. Cinder, the main character is talented mechanic and a cyborg, I say heck yea! How fun is this ride going to be? Well, I wanted it to be awesome. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed it but I didn’t love it mostly due to some drag time in moving the plot forward in the beginning. The author picks up pace mid way and ends on a high for the next CinderCoverArtbook.

Cinder is blamed by her step mother for her step sister’s illness, which is a pandemic. Cinder meets Prince Kai, where he is seeking her talents to fix his android. There is the royal ball coming up in part for the announcement of a marriage for Kai and the Lunar Queen, for political purposes of course. There are lots of interesting conflicts with twists and turns.

My favorite quotes from the book:

“Even in the Future the Story Begins with Once Upon a Time.” ― Marissa Meyer, Cinder

“I’m sure I’ll feel much more grateful when I find a guy who thinks complex wiring in a girl is a turn-on.” ― Marissa Meyer, Cinder

“But if there was one thing she knew from years as a mechanic, it was that some stains never came out.” ― Marissa Meyer, Cinder

Book Review: The Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Lanini Taylor

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

This book was published September 2011 so I’m a little late to the party.  Let me clarify party, yes there are literally thousands of fans ringing in the praises of this story.  Rightfully so, it’s a good one and the writing is great, an author to watch & read more of.  My biggest issue was pace of the story and I was/am grumpy about the ending for a solid book of 418 pages.

This is a fantasy young adult book and appropriate for this age and older (a proud salute to those older adults such as myself).   This story tackles themes about love, war, right, wrong and the perceptions of each.  To learn more, see some of my favorite quotes from the book and check out my book review below.

Smoke and Bone“Once upon a time, an angel and a devil fell in love.  It did not end well.” ― Laini Taylor, Daughter of Smoke & Bone

“Hey! My body may be small, but my soul is large. It’s why I wear platforms. So I can reach the top of my soul.”
― Laini Taylor, Daughter of Smoke & Bone

“It is a condition of monsters that they do not perceive themselves as such. The dragon, you know, hunkered in the village devouring maidens, heard the townsfolk cry ‘Monster!’ and looked behind him.” ― Laini Taylor, Daughter of Smoke & Bone
